Sayyid Al-Hakeem Receives Canadian Ambassador, Discusses Bilateral Relations, Economic Challenges, Political Stability

His Eminence Sayyid Al-Hakeem, Head of the National State Powers’ Alliance, received the Ambassador of Canada to Iraq, Christopher David Beam, at His office in Baghdad on Thursday morning, January 15, 2026. The meeting reviewed bilateral relations between Iraq and Canada, discussed the latest regional developments, and explored ways to ease tensions and strengthen stability.
H.E. emphasized the importance of advancing bilateral relations in a manner that serves shared interests, underscoring the need to expand cooperation and exchange expertise across the education, agriculture, and energy sectors, thereby supporting development pathways and strengthening economic partnerships.
H.E. noted that Iraq has overcome major security, political, and social challenges and is now consolidating positive gains while moving closer to sustainable stability. H.E. explained that the most pressing challenge in the coming phase is economic—particularly the need to move beyond a rentier, single-income model by diversifying the national economy and activating other productive sectors.
H.E. called for recognizing the positive messages conveyed by the recent elections, reflected in high participation rates, the selection of the people’s representatives, the swift announcement of results, and the absence of objections—factors that demonstrate clear public commitment and broad support for the political system and the democratic path.
H.E. also stressed the importance of adhering to constitutional timelines in selecting the three presidencies and completing the remaining constitutional entitlements, emphasizing the need to form a new government capable of safeguarding the interests of all, delivering services, and confronting current challenges.
